5x7 runner rugs are roughly 153 to 214 centimeters (60 to 84 inches) long, which is the smallest area rug size you’d want to go for in a bedroom—but it’s also the most affordable option.

As people are downsizing, 5x7 rugs are becoming extremely popular. 5x7 rugs are rarely used in a standard dining setup but apartment living has completely changed the way we interact with our space. Our favorite designs push the table to a window or wall. This saves a ton of space and can maximize light at the dining table.

These medium-sized rugs are great for small living rooms, offices, or under the foot of a queen-sized bed. It’s usually recommended to place furniture so that either all the legs are on the rug or at least the front legs are. With too small a rug, this layout might feel cramped, but placing the furniture further out might make your rug look like a postage stamp in the middle of the room. A great way to avoid all this is to layer your smaller rug on top of a large and inexpensive natural fiber rug. That way, you get the flair of your patterned rug and can still fill the space without breaking the bank.

The Most Common Places to Have a 5x7 Rug

Living Room:

Selecting a rug for the living room usually comes down to three choices: 5x7, 8x10 or 9x12. That being said, most people use a 5x7. Some size guides recommend that either all the furniture, except for the coffee table, is placed completely off the rug. This will look fine, but one exception is the placement of the sofa. In our opinion, the front legs of the sofa can rest on the rug while the rest of the sofa is off the rug. A 5x7 rug will typically be placed under the coffee table, with the rest of the furniture placed off the rug. Of course, if your space allows it, you can always have multiple rugs in the living room – say a runner is running behind the sofa, or an additional rug is in front of the fireplace. This can help balance out the room if the current rug feels too small. It all depends on the layout of the room, the amount, the size of the furniture, and how much flooring you want to show.

Bedroom:

For bedrooms, there are generally two different approaches. Rugs can be placed around the bed, with runners anchoring each side and a larger rug by the foot of the bed, or a rug can be placed horizontally under the bed with part of the rug exposed on each side. 5x7s have many applications in the bedroom. The rug can be placed horizontally near the top side of the bed, vertically next to the side of the bed, or be placed horizontally near the top of the bed so only a portion of the rug is exposed on the sides of the bed.

Queen Bed with Two 5×7 Rugs:

If you want a more unique look, consider placing two matching 5×7 rugs on either side of your queen bed. This is a great look for long and narrow spaces, as the rugs cover the length of the room on both sides of the bed, giving your feet a soft place to land! With a pair of 5×7 rugs, you’ll see almost the full design on both sides—which is great for rugs with beautiful designs and intricate patterns.

Twin Bed with a 5×7 Rug:

For a bedroom with a twin-size bed, you can get away with a much smaller rug. A 5×7 area rug provides coverage where you need it, covering the width of the bed and still having a bit at the end of the bed. However, it does cover up quite a bit of the rug’s design. If you want a bit more floor coverage and more of the design to show, you could always bump up to a 6×8 rug. The great thing about 5×7 rugs are how affordable they are. They’re great for a bedroom with a twin bed to keep it from sliding around on a hardwood floor—which is especially great for those with kids. In a small bedroom where the twin bed is pushed against a wall, you could also flip the rug the long way and layer it under the front legs of your nightstand and along the exposed side of the bed.

Office:

Your office cannot be complete without a rug that makes it your own. Whether it shows your traditional nature or your creative side – be sure you are setting the right tone for the room where big decisions are made. If the room setup is traditional, maybe you have your desk and then two chairs directly in front of you. You could have a rug that runs parallel to your desk and just put the back legs on- allowing for 2 chairs to be on the rug, but your chair to be directly on the floor – say a 5x7. Also, based on the setup of your office, if you have a larger open space, you can place the rug in the center – giving the room a foundation and sense of purpose.
